Welcome! My name is Menemsha Thompson and I am a social worker, psychotherapist & psychoanalyst-in-training.
As a therapist, my style is warm, relational, and laid-back. I am passionate about helping people build strong partnerships, friendships and communities. I work with people young and old who struggle with a range of issues that impact their relationships in all areas of life (friendship, romance, marriage, family, work). Common themes in my practice include low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, obsessional thinking, poor communication, career transitions, chronic illness, learning disabilities, mood disorders, and stress from sexism, racism, ableism and LGBTQIA2S+ discrimination.
Clinically, my areas of interest include complex and developmental trauma, gender and sexuality, interracial relationships, biraciality, domestic violence, nontraditional partnerships, communication and dating. I am LGBTQIA+ knowledgeable and affirming and I enjoy helping all people build safe and loving relationships.
I received my graduate degree in clinical social work from CUNY Hunter College in 2020 and have since worked as a therapist in both public and private settings. Prior to becoming a social worker, I completed a master’s degree in political theory from The CUNY Graduate Center, where my research centered on state violence and political repression. I have also worked as a preschool teacher in Brooklyn, New York, educating young children on difference, inclusivity, and community care.
I am currently enrolled as a candidate at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, where I am receiving postgraduate training in psychoanalysis. For me, psychoanalysis is about attuning to early life experiences and listening for how they shape our worldviews and our sense of self. I also have basic training in EMDR, which I use virtually to treat a wide variety of traumas, including interpartner violence and sexual assault. I work at my own private practice that based in New York, where I live, and I am also licensed to practice in the state of Virginia.
